Mike Mitchell To Be Inducted Into San Mateo Sports HOF

TEN individuals will be inducted into the San Mateo County Sports Hall of Fame on June 22 during ceremonies at the Bay Meadows Clubhouse in San Mateo. They will join 152 others who have been inducted previously. The Hall of Fame banquet has been presented by The Times since 1989, the newspaper's centennial year. The event recognizes Peninsula athletic figures who have had an impact both here and outside the County. Since the Hall of Fame was created, more than 5,000 people have attended the annual dinner that raises funds for County nonprofit organizations. The 2004 honorees are: - Don Delbon -- One of the County's greatest prep basketball players in the 1950s, he played at Jefferson High School in Daly City. - Linda Gates -- Linda Gates -- A gifted tennis player at Burlingame High School and Stanford University, she became an NCAA champion and an All-American at the latter institution. - Lars Jensen -- A Menlo-Atherton High School and College of San Mateo alum, he had mentored 46 All-American wrestlers at San Francisco State University as the 2003-04 season began. - Mike Mitchell -- A high-scoring basketball player at Capuchino High School in San Bruno in the 1970s, he later captained his team at the University of Notre Dame. - Harold Reynolds -- A former star baseball player at Caada College in Redwood City, he played in the major leagues for 14 productive seasons. - Renee Robinson -- A basketball star at Sacred Heart Prep in Atherton, she played at the University of Virginia and professionally in the WNBA. - Dick Sharon -- A multi-sport dynamo at Sequoia High School in Redwood City, he was a major league baseball player in the 1970s. - Al Terremere -- A legendary coach and teacher at Sequoia High School, the football field there is named in his memory. - Britt Williams -- A longtime football coach at Aragon High School in San Mateo, he established that program as one of the best in the West Bay region. - Plato Yanicks -- One of the finest track and field coaches in County history, he spent his local career at Menlo-Atherton and Hillsdale high schools. - The Hall of Fame is located at the Rawlings All-American Grill at Bridgepointe in San Mateo. Reproductions of stories and photos of those already inducted can be found at the County Office of Education in Redwood Shores and at the County History Museum in downtown Redwood City. Proceeds from the June Bay Meadows event will benefit the YMCA's Camp Jones Gulch, located in the coastal mountains near LaHonda. Tickets cost $50 and they will go on sale next month.
